Biography

William was born in 1752, the child of Benjamin Tryon and Rebecca Hurlbut[1] and was baptized in Wethersfield October 3, 1752.[2][3] He married Anna Hurlbut June 9, 1784 in Wethersfield.[4]

This newspaper advertisement may be when he is clearing the land in Farmington for his farm.

FOR SALE
Twenty-four acres of Staddle Wood Land, lying within seven miles and three-fourths of the city of Hartford. Also the wood on twenty acres of land, financing, and three years to cut and carry off the same. One third of the purchase money down and a reasonable time for the rest. Inquire of William Tryon living near said land. Farmington, Jan. 26, 1801. [5]

According to a newspaper sale notice, he owned a cider distillery north of Farmington. [6]

A probate notice for his estate dated 25 Jan 1821, noted that his estate was "represented insolvent" [7]

According to death notice, he served in the Revolutionary War. In Connecticut Men in the Revolutionary War, he is listed as joining from Wethersfield.

"Died. … At Farmington, Conn. Mr. William Tryon, aged 66, a soldier of the Revolution."[8] If his age is correctly reported, it would give him a birth year of 1754-1755. What is his connection with Onondaga, 250 miles away? The only Tryons I know of there are William Tryon (1757-1839) and his brother Elijah Tryon (abt.1783-1874).

Research Notes

Ancient Families of Wethersfield gives his birth date as September 1 (or October 1), 1752.

The following from The Tryon Family in America by Wes Tryon, is incorrect. Wes mixed the records of two different Williams, one who moved to Glastonbury and one who moved to Farmington.

WILLIAM TRYON 4.14d, third son of Benjamin Tryon 3.2h and Rebecca (Hurlbut) Tryon, was born Sept. 3, 1752, and died at Glastonbury, Conn., Aug. 31, 1825, at the age of 75 years. He married Anna Hurlbut at Wethersfield, June 9, 1784. She died Dec. 28, 1823. They had at least three sons: William, Jr. 5.49a, Isaac 5.49b, Warren 5.49c.

I have become convinced that this William is the one who moved to Farmington William. The Glastonbury William married Sarah Bidwell and had the children listed here. There is no evidence for Anna Hurlbut in Glastonbury other than TFA. This Glastonbury William may be the son of another William of Glastonbury, though we also have the husband of Sarah Bidwell as a son of Abiel: see William. The church records are not useful when dealing with William Tryons!
