Obituary of Samuel Berry Turner from THE FAIRFIELD DAILY
Samuel Berry Turner, 94 widely known as one of the oldestcontinuosresidents of Jefferson County, passed
away at 7 o'clock this morning at his home, 107 West Briggs Street,afteran illness of about two months. He is
also well known in Henry and Lee Counties.
Funeral services will be held at 1 :30 o'clock Wednesday afternoonfromthe Hoskins Funeral home in charge
of Rev. B.F. Williamson of the First Christian church. He will beassistedby Dr .W .F .Rex of the First Lutheran church and Clinton LodgeNo. 18,A.F.S.A.M. Interment will take place in Evergreen cemetery.
The body was taken to the Hoskins Funeral Home pendingfuneralarrangements.
Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, A.D. and James E. TurnerofFairfield, Wilson B. Turner of
Davenport and an only granddaughter, Mrs. John Montgomery of Mt.Pleasant.He also leaves one brother
Howard H. Turner of Miami, Oklahoma.
Samuel B. Turner was born on a farm near Salem, which was then a partofJefferson County, November 4,
1837, he was the son of Jonathan and Deborah Ann Turner. Losing hismotherat the age of five years he and a sister Ellen were taken into thehome ofan aunt Mrs. John(Jane)Swope, near Glassgow.

He learned the blacksmith trade from William Wright at Glassgowwhoconducted a school for that business. He was working at the forgehavingcompleted the course when he heard by carrier that PresidentAbrahamLincoln had called for men to defend the Union. He laid aside hisapronand in company with a boyhood friend the late George Heaton set outtowalk to Fairfield to enlist. October 31, 1861 and was assigned totheFourth Iowa Cavalry Company H. The Regiment Colonel was Asbury B.PorterofMt. Pleasant and the company was under Major Abial R PierceofLockridge, who organized it and was its Captaintwo years.
Mr Turner was appointed a Farrier for the Company and promoted toFirstFarrier September I, 1863. Re-enlisting in the Veteran RegimentDecember11, 1863 he was re appointed First Farrier. He was honorablydischargedat Davenport October 1, 1865. He was in a number of importantengagementsincluding Mechanicsburg, Miss, Bear Creek, Miss, The GreenRaid, BogueChitto, Miss, Livingston, Miss, Brice's Cross Roads, Miss, andVicksburg,Miss. Fifteen years ago he was the guest of the State of Iowaon thehistoric Vicksburg Battle Fields and located the bluff whichshelteredhim many nights while he shod the horses of his comrades. Duringhis longservice in the Army he lost a number of horses which were shotfrom underhim but he escaped without a serious wound.
Because of his high regard for the Chaplain of his Regiment Rev. AndrewJ.Kirkpatrick of Mt. Pleasant who was affiliated with the Masonic orderMr.Turner while home on a furlough in 1863 joined the Masonic lodgeatGlasgow and maintained his membership in that organization untilhisdeath being affiliated with Clinton Lodge No.15 of this city formanyyears. He is thought to be the oldest Mason in the State.
Returning to his blacksmith trade in Glasgow at the close of the War,Mr.Turner was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Case, daughter of Mr.andMrs. Hezakiah Case on December 10, 1863. Their home was establishedinGlasgow and in 1879 when William Louden opened his first factoryinFairfield Mr .Turner was placed in charge of the blacksmith shop inwhicha number of the products were fashioned at thetime. When the factorywasclosed some time later he returned to Glasgow and again engagedinbusiness. When the Louden factory was again opened here he returnedtoFairfield and was employed by the firm for a number of years.
Mr .Turner's home and family were his pride and joy and oldfashionedhospitality has been dispensed from it during the years since itwasestablished. His passing causes the first break in his immediatefamilycircle.
He became a member of the Grand Army of the Republic when anorganizationwas effected in Glasgow shortly after the order was foundedin Decatur,Ill. Transferring his membership to Fairfield he had been atthe time ofhis death a member of George Strong Post No 19 for many years.

JEFFERSON VETS OF FOURTH CAVALRY AT TURNER EVENT

Fairfield, Ia., Oct 6- The five remaining members of Co. M., FourthIowaCavalry, living in Jefferson county held a reunion today at the homeofMr. and Mrs. Samuel B. Turner, 107 West Briggs street. Thegatheringcelebrated the birthday anniversary of the host October 2, whenheattained his 85th year.
There were present, Morillo H. Westenhaver, aged 80, Alonzo J. Green,aged80 and the host, all of this city and Gustav A. Smithberg aged 83,ofLockridge. It is a notable fact that Taylor, Smithberg and Turner wereinthe conflict from 1861 to the close in 1865. Westenhaver and Green,boysof 18, enlisted in 1863-64. The three sons of the host, A.C. andJ.E.Turner of this city and Wilson G. Turner ofRock Island, Ill., werealsopresent to assist their parents on this joyous occasion.
Mr. Turner was born and reared in Jefferson county, the son of Mr.andMrs. Jonathan Turner, pioneer residents of this part of the state.Helearned the blacksmithing trade under William Wright in Glasgow andwasworking at his forge when Lincoln called for volunteers.
