Biography

Thomas B. Wright was born in Virginia. He appears to have first been married to a woman named Nancy, with whom he had three known children - Margaret Wright - born in 1798, Mary Wright - born in 1802 and Permelia Wright - born in 1805. These three each married in Harrison County, Kentucky between 1819 and 1825, with Thomas Wright signing the marriage bonds for each of the three.

Thomas married Mary Bullock in Fayette County, Kentucky on August 12, 1815. Thomas and Mary appear to have had two daughters, Nancy Wright, born in Kentucky in 1817 and Eliza Wright, born in Kentucky close to 1821. There is another possible candidate for a son of Thomas and Mary, William G.S. Wright, who was born in Kentucky in 1823.

Evidence and Inferences on Thomas Wright

Shari Woster, a descendant of Isaac Routledge and Margaret Wright, first located the marriage bond posted in Harrison County, Kentucky on November 15, 1819 by Isaac Rutledge and Thomas Wright and observed that Thomas Wright would have been born prior to 1770.

There are four Kentucky marriage records from 1815 to 1825 that appear to have been signed by the same "Thomas Wright." My current working hypothesis is that Thomas Wright and Nancy had three daughters, Margaret (Wright) Rutledge - born 1798, Mary (Wright) Barnes - born 1802 and Permelia (Wright) Foster - born 1805. In 1815, Thomas Wright remarried to Mary Bullock.

There is an 1878 entry in the death record ledger for Harrison County for Polly Barns, which lists that her parents were Thos. and Nancy Wright of Virginia.

  • John J. Coates - List of Heirs in His Estate Record - 1867. Harrison, Dennis vs. Eliza J. Coats, et. al., Meigs County Probate, Final Records, 1863-1872, volume 3, page 45. On May 2, 1867, Judge W.H. Lasley of the Meigs County Probate Court appointed Dennis Harrison as the administrator of the estate of John J. Coats as it was "...appearing to the Court that John J. Coates, decd, died leaving no heirs of legal age residing within our said County, and that Eliza J. Coats, the widow of said decedent declines to administer upon the estate of her deceased husband." The written statement suggests that Dennis Harrison might simply have served as a court-appointed administrator with no connection to the family of Eliza (Wright) Coates. Conversely, the possible family proximity to Eliza J. (Wright) Coates suggests that he might have taken on the administrator role to help his wife's aunt.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:
