William was born about 1801 in Ireland.^[1] About 1837 William married Elizabeth (Carr) Ovens (abt.1813-aft.1891) and their first child Mary Jane was born in 1838.^[2] Sometime before the end of 1839 William, Elizabeth, and Mary Jane, left Ireland for a new life in North America. They sailed to New York, where his son Thomas was born in 1839.^[3] William and his family are not found in the 1840 US census so likely had left the United States for Canada before that census. They are also not found in the 1842 Canadian Census. However, William's son John was born in Canada as early as 1841.^[1] Son Howard was born in 1846 in Toronto, so the family must have been living there at that time.^[4]

In 1851 William (50) and his family were farming in the Township of Dorchester, Middlesex, Canada West. Besides William the household consisted of Elizabeth (40), Mary Jane (15), Thomas (13), William (11), John (10), Howard (9), Elizabeth (3), and Sarah (2). They lived in a log house.^[1]

The 1861 census for the household shows Elizabeth as the head of the household and states she was widowed. No deaths occurred in the family in 1860, so William must have died between 1851 and 1859. He would have been in his mid-fifties.^[5]
