Edward was born in Lyons, Wayne County, New York on September 13, 1815.[1] He and Lydia came to Michigan before 1860 and settled on a farm just east of Albion.[2] Afterwards, they moved into the village of Albion, where they resided 28 years.[3] Edward was married to Lydia A. Dunbar of Perry, Wyoming County (Now Genessee County), New York February 4, 1842.[4]
Two children were born to them, but both died in infancy Elsie Rice[5] and Watts Rice.[6] He's been a member of the Baptist church for over 40 years and in his death that church loses one of its best and most faithful members. It is said that Mr. Rice was one of the most liberal supporters of the Baptist church having paid one-tenth of the cost of its edifice.
"Edward Rice residing on Ash Street, Albion died Tuesday evening, March 19, 1895 at 11 o'clock pm of paralysis.[7] He had been in poor health all winter, but for a few days preceeding his death he was unusually well. He was downtown on Tuesday, but at 8 o'clock in the evening he was stricken down at his home and died about three hours later. He was conscious up to the last.
The funeral was held Friday at 2 o'clock at the house, conducted by Rev. G.B. Simons of Benton Harbor, assisted by Rev. F.E. Britten, pastor of the Baptist church of Albion.He is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Albion, Calhoun, Michigan.[8]
