Biography

Achille Mercier was born in Ishpeming, Marquette, Michigan, United States in 1869, but when he was about six his family returned to Quebec, Canada where his parents were born. In October 1877 he got into difficulties and almost drowned in Lake Superior, his father saved him, but sadly lost his own life. After his father died Achille's mother moved back to Ste. Nicolet in Quebec. Achille was listed with his family in the 1881 Canada Census. ^[1] Achille married Georgiana Hebert on July 8, 1891 They had twins the next year but sadly both of them died within two hours of their birth. The family know that they had two more sons, but I have not been able to find any records for them. Georgiana died at the age of 34 and Achille married Fabolia Matte on December 21, 1901 at Princeville, Quebec, Canada. They emigrated to the United States and settled in North Andover, Massachusetts where their first six children were born. In 1907 they returned to Canada and the family increased to thirteen children. Achille was a grocer and opened a shop in Mount Vernon, Lawrence, Massachusetts. This was a largely French Canadian area and life centred round the Sacred Heart Church and parish. Achille was mentioned in Massachusetts State Vital Records in 1908 record^[2] Achille is mentioned in the 1920 Census with his wife and six of his children.^[3] Achille died on February 7, 1931 at Essex County, Massachusetts, He was buried at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Lawrence, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA in Section M1^[4]
