While we continue with the U.S. Civil War April Challenge for Rock Island Cemetery there is a veteran of the 58th Alabama Inf. Co. G.
Bio: Regarding Private John Carter Ashton, who served with G Company of the 58th Alabama Infantry during the conflict.
Private Ashton's service tragically concluded on February 21, 1864. He was captured following the significant engagement at Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Subsequent to his capture, he was transported to the prisoner of war facility at Rock Island, Illinois, where he unfortunately succumbed to typhoid fever.
The Ashton family experienced considerable loss during this period. John's brother, Joseph Ashton, who was attached to Sweet's Light Artillery from Mississippi, was also critically wounded during the same battle at Missionary Ridge. Joseph's mortal injuries led to his burial in the Confederate Cemetery located in Marietta, Georgia. Their third brother, Samuel Ashton, who served in the same 58th Alabama regiment as John, notably managed to evade capture during the intense fighting at Missionary Ridge.
The family's geographical roots trace back to Franklin County, Georgia, before they subsequently relocated to the area around Ashville, in Saint Clair County, Alabama. (See bio at FindAGrave)
