James H. Jackson. I have heard this deposition read over. I have understood your questions and my answers are correctly recorded as read.

Sworn to and subscribed before me this 23 day of April 1906, and I certify that the contents were fully made known to deponent before signing.

they fired on us. The Colonel (Hartwell) sent back and got the colored man and hung him. I saw him hanging in the tree. Jackson told this so straight that I am pretty sure he must have been there. I do not recollect his being shot in the leg or the wrist. I knew him as James H. Jackson. He never said anything about having any other name. He never spoke of being a sergeant. I think he told me he came from Michigan. I do not know what town. No I do not recollect Warren Allen nor William H. Harrison.

I recollect now of seeing James H. Jackson in the Marion Home. I do not recollect seeing him in the service. That TBD "recollect" was interlined at this point, I cannot yet recall what company he served in, and I never heard him say his name was anything else than

not appear to be more than 26 years old. I met him at his house and was talking with him. He asked me what regiment I belonged to and when I told him the 55 Massachusetts, he said he belonged to the same, that he had been transferred from the 54th. I do not recollect what company he said he served in. We talked of places we had been and he had it pretty straight as I recollect it.

He told of one circumstance. He told about a colored man we saw near the line of march as we were going into battle of Honey Hill. He was calling hogs and when the officer asked him if there were any rebels about, He said, no, that there wasn't any in five miles of the place and we had not gone half a mile till
