I cannot account for it.

Question: Are you sure that you service in Company "D" 54 Massachusetts?

Answer: I am fully sure of it.

Describe yourself at time of enlistment.

23 years of age. Born in Spruce Canada. Complexion Black. Eyes Yellow Black. 5ft 8 or 10 inches high. No marks or scars on person.

Could you write?

No sir. I never learned to read or write.

Then you could not have served as First Sergeant.

Oh no sir. I was a private.

No sir, I never knew any other James H. Jackson than myself.
