I was born in Canada - My father's name was Bill Jackson - and my mother Lucy Jackson. They were slaves in Tennessee - and ran away to Canada - and I was their first child and was born shortly after they came to Canada at a colored settlement called Dresedent [Researcher note: probably Dresden which was in Ontario] below Chatham - and when I was a "lad boy" - about 10 or 12 years old I guess I ran away from home and worked for Mr. Walker - now dead - in a still house at Walkertown - above Windsor - a few weeks - and then I skipped over in Detroit Michigan - and dodged around

Jackson who was a 1st Sergeant Company D 54 Regiment and Company B 55 Regiment Massachusetts Colored Volunteer Infantry. Also a certificate from the Adjutant General's Office - Boston, Massachusetts - not dated, showing the name of James H. Jackson, of Adrian, age 19, occupation blacksmith, is from upon rolls of Company D 54 Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Colonel Hallowell; enlisted April 8, 1863 and TBD U.S. Service March 30, 1863, for 3 years - Mustered Out August 29, 1865 - Remarks Transfer to 55 Infantry as Sergeant Company B." - E.B.O.)

DEPOSITION A

Case of James H. Jackson, Certificate No. 922,015

On this Saturday 20th day of October, 1906, at Cleveland, County of Cuyahoga State of Ohio, before me, E.B. Olmsted a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says: I am unkown years of age; my post-office address is Park Place, Pine Street.

I think I was about 30 years of age when I enlisted in the army but I do not know how old I was at that time - and do not know how old I am now. I am pensioned at $12.00 per month
