two or three years. I was not in any battle or engagement only the fight at Honey Hill South Carolina. I think that fight of Honey Hill was the first year after I enlisted in Spring of year or coming warm weather. Right after the fight at Honey Hill at a little place called Mt. train from Detroit to New York and from New York City down to Boston Massachusetts and there we were sent to Camp Merriman to be drilled - At Boston I was put in the 54 Regiment Massachusetts Colored Infantry - in Company D. I think we were at Boston Massachusetts two or three months - but I don't know how long. When we left Boston we went on Steam boat - a new propeller - to same island I think off South Carolina - then I think we went to Raleigh North Carolina - I was in the army only through one winter and that winter we were camped in the piney woods I think somewhere in South Carolina but I do not know the name of that camp - or the name of the town nearby. I do not remember the dates of my enlistment or discharge - but it looked to me like I was in the army

at Pontiac and different places so my folks could not get track of me - and would go back home to Canada once in awhile - and I was home at Dresdent Canada when the war commenced - A man came from Detroit Michigan - to Dresden Canada - looking for recruits but they told him in Dresdent he could not get any recruits out of there - and after he left - I went over to Detroit and enlisted. A boy named Jerry Vaughn I think - and another fellow named Jim Wilson I think his name was went with me from Dresdent to the Barracks at Detroit Michigan, to enlist in the army.
