I never was a blacksmith before I enlisted. I had two brothers. John and Bill Jackson - and one sister Jane Jackson - all younger than me - John and Jane are both dead - but Bill was living at Buckston Canada - the last I heard of him 7 or 8 years ago - He was not married. He worked around horses - and such as that and played cards and dice and drank all the whiskey he could get.

I was never married before I went in the army.

I was never married at any time until in January 1891 at Ypsilanti Michigan - I was married to my present wife - Her name was Mary Emma Sylvan

I ever knew I was enlisted as James H. Jackson. I do not remember who it was who wrote for that "duplicate" for me.

It was from this "duplicate" I first started my claim for pension.

Yes Jerry Vaughn and Jim Wilson who enlisted at same time I did were in same Regiment with me but not my Company. I do not know what Company they were in but I think in Company I 54 Massachusetts Colored Infantry. There were a good many others in the Regiment, I might have known before I enlisted that I did not pay much attention to but I do not remember their names.

I am positive I first enlisted at Boston, not at Boston - but at Detroit Michigan was where I enlisted.

I was a farmer before I enlisted.
