regiment. We had a Colonel Hallowell to succeed him.

Our captain was disabled and resigned before I joined and his successor was Lieutenant Chipman, whereabouts unknown. I forget the other Lieutenant but Sergeant Swail was promoted to Second Lieutenant. Don't know where he is. Orderly Sergeant was Thompson. We had a Sergeant Pinckney who was in the Michigan State Soldier's Home, Grand Rapids, Michigan a year ago I heard. Don't know his given name - I think we had a Sergeant Butler. Don't know his given name or current address.

I don't recall a Captain Phelps or Lieutenant Smith. We were not transferred or consolidated with the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Colored

DEPOSITION E

Case of James H. Jackson, No. 922,015

On this 11th day of July, 1906, at National Military Home, county of Grant, State of Indiana, before me, C.E. Paul, a Special Examiner of the Bureau of Pensions personally appeared before me William Cebolt, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says:

I am 71 years of age; address above. I served in Company D 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Colored Infantry October 9, 1863 to May 29, 1865. I was a Private.

I was born in East Tennessee and raised in Indiana.

Our Colonel Shaw was killed at Fort Wagner, Morris Island, South Carolina in June [Researcher note: July] 1863 before I joined the
