Morris Island, South Carolina in June [Researched note: July], 1863. Major Hallowell was next Colonel. Our Captain was Hartwell who was later promoted to Colonel of the 55th Massachusetts Colored Volunteer Infantry. Abington was our Major next. Out next captain was Edward Jones. He was wounded at Fort Wagner, South Carolina and resigned soon after.

Charles Chipman became Captain and served till discharge.

Our Lieutenants were Dexter, Stevenson, and Reed. Stevenson was killed at Sumpterville Mills, South Carolina.

Our Sergeants were Cesar, Thompson, John A. Dover, Alexander Pinckney, James Henry Wilkins and Butler. I don't know of any of them being alive and don't recall given names of any officer but as given by me. I recall Sergeant James H. Jackson but he was

DEPOSITION F

Case of James H. Jackson, No. 922,015

On this 12th day of July, 1906, at National Military Home, county of Grant State of Indiana, before me, C.E. Paul, a Special Examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared Joseph F. Hallowell, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says:

I am 117 years of age; I claim I served with General Jackson at New Delaware, Louisiana in 1815. I don't know what year I was born. I was raised in Marshall County, Mississippi. I served in Company D 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Colored Infantry from March 16, 1863 to August 1865 as Private.

Our Colonel was named Shaw. He was killed at Fort Wagner,
