Founded in 1903 in Cornersville by Felix Massey as the Massey School, the Massey Military Academy converted to a military school at the beginning of World War I. The school was relocated to Pulaski in1908.

Massey was associated with the school until 1924, when he became Dean of Men at the University of Tennessee. He sold his interest in MMA to Daniel Metts and Thomas Izzard, who sold the school to the City Board of Education of Pulaski a year later. Some notable Massey instructors include fugitive poet and Vanderbilt alumnus and professor Donald Davidson, and Nashville Banner and Memphis Commercial Appeal editorial staffer Willard C. ?Parson? Teague.
