The Ruins of Schofield Hall

Schofield Hall

The ruins of Schofield Hall lie 700 feet above sea level. The Hall was built in the 16th century of local stone, but the land was associated with the Schofield family from 1310 (at least) when John de Schofield was the witness to a charter relating to land rights. Up until World War 1 the hall was in fairly good repair and there was a rumour that it was due to be sold for export – to be taken down and re-built in the United States of America. However, the war intervened with the plan and the house crumbled into ruin in the following years. In the late 19th century the Hall had been divided up into cottages.
