6th Kentucky Infantry Regiment

Pvt. Caleb W. Allen born in 1840, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on October 7, 1861, at the age of 21, recorded as being six feet tall. His service period concluded with his passing in 1864. Records generally associate him with the 6th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry (Confederate). However, a notable inconsistency arises concerning his company designation: while some historical documents, including his gravestone, indicate service with Company D, other authoritative sources, such as the National Park Service (NPS) records, list him as serving with Company H of the 6th Regiment, Kentucky Mounted Infantry. This discrepancy warrants additional research to definitively confirm his unit assignment.

Tragically, Private Allen’s service culminated in his capture at the Battle of Chickamauga on November 24, 1863. He was subsequently held as a Prisoner of War at Rock Island Prison. He succumbed to disease, specifically Variola (smallpox), on March 13, 1864, while incarcerated. His final resting place is marked by Grave Number 807, situated south of the prison barracks.

Further biographical research reveals another point of ambiguity regarding his birthplace. While some records, such as FindAGrave, suggest Indiana, the fact that his known siblings were born in Kentucky strongly indicates that he, too, likely originated from Kentucky. Confirming his precise place of birth would enhance the completeness of his historical profile.
