I have heard you read claimant's deposition as to time, place and circumstances under which he claims the origin of his alleged wounds,

My recollection is that he was a Jerseyman and Enlisted in Burlington Co[unty] N.J. He was a man about my height at enlistment near 5 f[ee]t 5, which was my height then, dark complexion.

Q[uestion] Do you know of any wound or injury he incurred or any disease he contracted?

A[nswer] I can't say he did, that I know of.

Q You do not know of any wound he received?

A No, I don't. He may have.

Q I have read your reply to Bureau inquiry and ask you to explain?

A If I said that I can't swear to it as I was not in the Honey Hill fight having been left sick on Morris Island and I can't remember about Sanders getting wounded at any time.

DEPOSITION A

Case of W[illia]m Gibson alias John Sanders No. 648529

On this 20th day of Nov[ember], 1899, at State of N[ew] J[ersey], before me, M. J. Maloney, a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared James Oliver, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says:

I am 61 years of age; my post-office address is 37 Tichnor Ave[nue] Newark N.J., occupation laborer

I served in Co[mpany] D, 54th Mass[achusetts] Vol[unteer]s from March 17, 1863 to Sept[ember] 22 [18]65. I enlisted as private and promoted Corporal.

I remember a John Sanders of my company.

I never knew him prior to enlistment and have never met him since.
