Murata Shigeharu was born in Shinbaba, Shimabara-mura, Minamitakaki-gun, Nagasaki-ken on 9 April 1909. He was a torpedo bomber pilot officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) with the rank of captain, having led a squadron of torpedo bombers in the attack on Pearl Harbor that crippled several battleships of the United States Navy (USN), including the USS West Virginia (BB-48) and the USS Oklahoma (BB-37). Shigeharu also participated in the Battle of Midway, in which he survived the destruction of the Akagi by American aircraft. He was killed in action during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands right after leading an attack that destroyed the USS Hornet (CV-8) with strikes from three bombs and two torpedoes.
