Biography

Josiah Chandler was born at Andover, Massachusetts on December 28, 1683, son of William and Sarah (Buckmaster/Buckminster) Chandler. [1][2]

He married Sarah Ingalls [2] at Andover on February 27, 1706/7. Sarah was born at Andover on March 21, 1684/5, daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Hendrick) Ingalls. [1] [3]

Josiah died at Andover on August 12, 1752 in his 68th year. [1]

In his will written February 18, 1748/9, he left bequests to:

  • beloved wife Sarah
  • son Benjamin L40, as he has already had a portion
  • son Josiah L40, as he has already has a portion
  • son Samuel 20s, as I have already provided him an education at the University in Cambridge
  • daughter Sarah Chandler L100 and a good cow, when she marries, or in 3 years if unmarried
  • son Abijah L300
  • son David who been at my service for several years, all my land an buildings in Andover, and my tacking and utensils for the carrying on of husbandry
  • son Daniel L 120 [4]

The estate inventory of animals and related equipment, land holdings and buildings, was assessed at L 522 8d, with land being valued at L 464 18s, and household goods assessed separately. [4]

On June 14, 1754, son David, sole executor was assigned to distribute the balance remaining from the the estate, of which 2/3 went to his brother Benjamin and 1/3 to brother Josiah. [4]

His widow Sarah died there on February 13, 1754, aged 68/9. [1] [3]
