Biography

ELIZABETH LOTHROP, b. at Tolland, 23 Aug 1765 daughter of John Lathrop and Lucy Gray;^[1] d. at Brookfield, VT, 16 Sep 1837;^[2] m. at Tolland, 17 Aug 1785,^[3] ANDREW STEEL,^[4] b. at Tolland, 25 Dec 1763 son of James and Abigail (Huntington) Steele;^[5] Andrew d. at Brookfield, 18 Feb 1811.^[6]

Elizabeth and Andrew were first in Tolland, then Randolph, Vermont and lastly recorded in Brookfield. In 1810, Andrew Steel headed a household of eleven persons at Brookfield: one male 45 and over, one female 45 and over, one male 10 to 15, two males 16 to 25, one male 26 to 44, two females under 10, one female 10 to 15, and two females 16 to 25.^[7]

Andrew Steel did not leave a will, and his estate entered probate 6 April 1811 with Aaron Steel and Elisha Allis as administrators at the request of widow Elisabeth with Hiram Steel providing surety for the bond. Personal estate was $547.48. The estate was insolvent. A dower amount of $229 was set to the widow.^[8]
