Biography
Elisha Bourne was born probably in Sandwich, Plymouth Colony about 1641.[1]
At 34 years of age he married Patience Skiffe, born there on 25 March 1652, died 'Patience Bourne, widow,' on 25 October 1716, at an age of sixty-six, daughter of James Skiffe and a sister of Bathsheba Skiffe who married his brother Shearjashub Bourne.[2] They had seven children who were born at Sandwich.[1]
Rev. Richard Bourne deeded a tract of land in Manomet, 19 May 1677, to this son and Elisha is thought to have lived there.[1] He was listed as a Freeman 7 June 1681,[3] was appointed Constable of Sandwich 6 June 1683; he served as Deputy to the last Plymouth General Court in 1691.[1] In 1695 'liberty was granted to Elisha Bourne to set up a grist mill upon Herring river - provided the toll shall not exceed 2 qts. per bu.' It was voted to pay back Elisha (and John Gifford) one-half of the money they had paid for not giving service when impressed for royal duty.[4]
Elisha died at Sandwich on December 21, 1706. He is buried in the Old Town Cemetery in Sandwich.[5][6]
"The will of 'Elisha Bourne of Sandwich,' dated 9 June 1698 and proved 3 March 1706/7, gives to his beloved wife Patience for her own use the house that the testator 'had of her father James Skeffe now deceased.' She was made co-executor with their son Nathan, and was to have the use of much of the real and other property. The inventory, presented 21 Dec. 1706, shows real estate totaling some £500.[7][8]
