Barney separated from his first wife, Frances, and he married her sister, Emmaline Stricklin. Barney and Emmaline Pitts moved their family to KS where he farmed.

When he joined he was 18 years of age, born in Hickory Co., MO, 5 ft. 3" tall, fair complexion, hazel eyes, light hair, Farmer. May & June 1863 - Present; July & August, 1863 - Absent - sick since August 17, 1863 in General Hospital in Clarendon, MO; Sep & Oct 1863 - Present; Oct 20, 1863 roll call in Little Rock, AR; Nov & Dec 1863 muster roll; Jan & Feb 1864 - Absent sick in Little Rock, AR; Discharged on March 2, 1864 sick for 60 days with organic disease of right-side of heart causing general dropsy and much constitutional depression. Soldier desires to be addressed at Hermitage, Hickory Co., MO. Muster-out roll dated July 20, 1865 Discharged in Little Rock, AR by Surgeon General. Source: Union Army Military Record.
