Ruth (Cooke) Holmes was born on 4 Feb 1720 in Plympton, Plymouth, Province of Massachusetts Bay, daughter of Francis Cooke (~1696 - 1724) and Ruth (Sylvester) Phinney (1702 - <1779).[1]
In 1724, Mr. Samuel Ring was appointed guardian to Ruth who is under 14 years old.[2]
Ruth married Josiah Holmes (1716 - 1782) on 29 Mar 1740 in Kingston, Plymouth. Their children were:
Ruth Holmes of Kingston, widow died intestate and on 8 March 1792, Jonathan Holmes Jr., of Kingston was granted the administration of her estate.[3]
In 1792, the real estate that was part of her dower from her husband, Josiah Holmes estate was recorded. It was found that it could not be divided with spoiling the whole, it was settled upon John Holmes (one of the sons), who in turn paid the other children their share, viz., Simeon Holmes (eldest son), Francis Holmes, Josiah Holmes, Jonathan Holmes Jr., Gershom Holmes, Sylvester Holmes, Susanna, wife of Ebenezer Cushman, Grace Holmes, and Elizabeth Holmes.[4]
Her inventory was taken on 13 March 1792 in Kingston.[5] An account of her estate by Jonathan Holmes Jr., was recorded which included funeral expenses, a maid attending her for seven years, and administration fees.[6]
