Lovell Snow was born on September 4, 1773, in Ashford, Windham Co., Connecticut, New England. He was the son of Robert Snow and his wife Sarah (Chubb) Snow. Both parents were from Mansfield, Connecticut.
On April 7, 1791, in Ashford, Windham, Connecticut, USA, Lovell Snow married Sally (Sarah) MAYNARD (aka Mainer). They had 3 children and moved to Kentucky and then Ohio.[1]
On September 2, 1802, Sally (Maynard) Snow divorced Lovell Snow on the grounds of "desertion & adultery". After several years, Lovell SNOW married Freelove Aurilla Dutcher (b: 20 Dec. 1802 in Erie PA), on January 31, 1821, in York Twp., Athens Co., Ohio. They had 5 sons:[2]
A family genealogy[3] states that in 1828, the family was living in a cave in Meigs County, Ohio. Freelove Aurilla (Dutcher) Snow, apparently fed up with Lovell Snow's inability or unwillingness to provide for his family, deserted him and their 4 sons, having her last son: Philander Larkin Snow, alone back at her girlhood home in Erie, Erie Co., Pennsylvania. Freelove then lived up to her name by running off with a prosperous local Ohio farmer, James Forrest, in about 1830. They went down the Ohio & Mississippi Rivers to Seacy County, Arkansas Territory, where his legal wife, Mazy Forrest, divorced him. They then married and moved to Ozark County, Missouri, where they had 9 children together. James Forrest died fighting (for the Union) in the Civil War but Freelove (Dutcher) Forest lived into her 80s, dying in Ozark County, Missouri, on May 2, 1888.[4]
Not knowing what to do, it's said that one day after she left, Lovell Snow told his young boys to "go play with your friends down by the river and then go home with them." At least one, Newman Summer Snow, moved in with John Harris' family nearby.
Lovell Snow then moved away to Whitley County, Indiana, where he married Harriet Brown, a young widow, b: ca. 1803 in Vermont. Lovell and Harriet (Brown) Snow had 3 daughters:[5]
The 1850 US Census for Newton Twp., Whitley County, Indiana, lists Lovell Snow as married and living there with his wife, Harriet Snow, and their 3 daughters. He was 76 years old and she was 47.[6]
Lovell Snow died in 1851 in Whitley County, Indiana. Harriet (Brown) Snow remarried to James Jones (1860 Census). Lovell Snow's exact grave site is not known but he does have a Find A Grave memorial #165901363.[7]
