James D. Hogan was born about 1778 in Overton County, Tennessee, son of William James Hogan (1750–1827) and Jennie Rogers (1760– ).
He married Sally Sevier in August 1811 in Overton County, Tennessee. Their children were:
Young married Amy Unknown. Their daughter was Serena Elizabeth Hogan (1852–1940).
He died about 1852 in Marion County, Arkansas, aged about 74. He was originally buried in Hogan Cemetery in Marion County,[1]but burials there were moved to Oakland Cemetery in Baxter County, Arkansas when construction on Bull Shoals dam began.[2][3]
In the 1820 census, Young was in Darnells Parish, Caldwell, Kentucky, United States.[4]
In the 1830 census, Young was in Calloway, Kentucky.[5]
In the 1840 census, Young was in Littleworth Fork, Marion, Arkansas.[6]
In the 1850 census Young (age 62), Farmer, was in Marion, Arkansas, United States.[7]

By WILLIE BLOUNT, Governor of and over the state of Tennessee,
A Proclamation.
WHERE AS the General Assembly of this state did on the 24th day of October in the year of our Lord 1805, pass an act entitled "An act to authorize the governor for the time being to offer a reasonable reward for the apprehending of any person or persons who may have committed any flagitious crimes," and whereas it hath been represented to me by the coroner of Overton county in this state, that a certain Young Hogan, born in the state of Kentucky, but lately a resident of Overton county, being five feet ten or eleven inches high, slender made, swarthy complexion, thin visaged, Roman nose, light hair, grey eyed, twenty-six or twenty-seven years of age, did on the fifteenth day of December last past, murder a certain Reuben Smith of the county aforesaid, and did make his escape before the process of the law could be served on him. Now therefore, I Willie Blount, Governor, as aforesaid, do by virtue of the power and authority in the vested, offer by these presents, a reward of One Hundred Dollars for the apprehending and delivery of the aforesaid Young Hogan, (a fugitive from justice) into the custody of the sheriff of Overton county so that justice may be done. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & caused the great seal of the state to be affixed at Nashville, this ninth day of February in the year of 1815." WILLIE BLOUNT. By the Governor. W. The Grand Jury for the body of the County of Greene returned into Court here - a true bill against Young Hogan for an assault with intent to kill - a true bill against John P. Campbell, Sidney Ingram and others for rioting. And having no further business before them were discharged.
