Biography

Sarah Elizabet Bailes is not the daughter of Joseph D Bayless by either of his wives (records and DNA proves this). Her correct parentage is explained below. Joseph Bayless had a daughter named Sarah Evelyn Bayless whose mother was Joseph's 2nd wife, Mary "Polly" Casteel. Sarah Evelyn Bayless married James Edward Hamm in St Francois Co Missouri.

The subject of this profile NEVER lived in St Francois Co Missouri.

Sarah Elizabeth Balies was the daugther of James H. Bailus/Bailes/Bayless and his 1st wife, Ann West. James and Ann were married 11 Jan 1838 in Pittsylvania Co Virginia. ^[1] Ann West died sometime prior to the 1850 U S Federal Census which was taken in District 10, Butler Co Missouri showing James with his 2nd wife Charlotte/Charity Lail, his child (Sarah Elizabeth) shown as Elizabeth on the census, and James and Charlotte's/Charity's 1st child Morning (Malinda Morning). ^[2]

Sarah ELIZABETH continued to live in her father's household through the 1860 U S Census also taken at District 1, Butler Co Missouri. ^[3]

Sarah ELIZABETH married Johnson J Roberts on 3 March 1870 in Butler Co Missouri. ^[4] On their marriage record her maiden name is spelled "Bailee." There is no record for them on an 1870 census, but by the 1880 U S Federal Census they are living in Current River, Randolph Co Arkansas with their children as transcribed Wallen (Rufus Walter) age 8, Franklin (William Franklin) age 3, and Samuel age 3 of 12 months (Mar 1880), an older male boarder named William Kear ???, and a 19 year old girl named Nancy Balis designated as a servant who is Sarah Elizabeth's 1/2 sister by her father's 2nd wife. ^[5]

In 1900 Sarah ELIZABETH, her husband, and children are living at Pigeon, Baxter Co Arkansas living their through the 1910 census. ^{[6] [7]}

On the 1920 census Sarah ELIZABETH and husband Johnson J Roberts are living by themselves, their children grown and out of the house, in Coal Creek, Wagoner Co Oklahoma. ^[8]

Sarah ELIZABETH Bailes alternately used on census and other documents the names Elizabeth, Sarah E., and Sarah. Her maiden name on various documents has been spelled Bailes, Bailee, Bailes, Bayless and Balis.

Sarah Elizabeth Bailes die don 10 Dec 1927 in Wagoner Co Oklahoma and is buried with her husband Johnson J Roberts at the Brady Cemetery about 3-4 miles SW of the town of Wagoner, Oklahoma. ^{[9] [10]}
