Biography

Rachel Cushing was born on April 16, 1777 in Pembroke, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Elijah Cushing and his second wife Anne Thomas Cushing. ^[1] She was baptized on June 2, 1777 at the Second Church of Christ in Pembroke. ^[1]

In 1790 the family was still living in Pembroke. ^[2] Rachel would be one of the six females in the family.

Her father, Elijah Cushing, signed a will on November 17, 1800 in Pembroke. ^[3] He left All the rest of my Estate both Real & Personal of whatever kind and wherever found I give to my four sons & to my five daughters. Namely Edward Cushing, Thomas Cushing, Isaac Cushing, John Cushing, Tamsin Cushing, Tamar Cushing, Rachel Cushing, Anne Cushing and Betty Cushing, to be divided equally between them.

Elijah died on September 13, 1807. Her mother, Anne, died in 1821. In the 1840 U. S. Census ^[4] Rachel was listed as head of the household of four. They were listed as living in Hanson, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. The West Parish of Pembroke had been incorporated as Hanson in 1820 so the family had not been moved.

In the U. S. Census (24 September 1850) ^[5] Rachel, age seventy-three, was listed as the head of the household in Hanson. The only other person in the household was Ann, her sixty-six year, old sister. They had property valued at $1200.

Rachel died on March 28, 1857 in Hanson ^[6] . No headstone was found at this time, but it is likely she was buried at Fern Hill Cemetery in Hanson where other family members were buried.

Birth Year

Some records show the birth year as 1777. This is perhaps based on the Julian calendar although the change had taken place in most places in the United States in 1752.
