Rebecca was a child of William Henry Smith and Margaret (Lloyd) Smith, and sister to Anna (Smith) Strong. She married John Aspinwall in 1766 and had six children with him. He died the year after their eldest son died and the same year his last child was born, leaving Rebecca a single parent with five children under eight years of age.
She was listed in the 1790 and 1800 federal census as owner of a farm in Flushing, NY. The household in 1790 included one free male 16 years or older (John, who turned 16 that year) and two free females which would have been Rebecca and one of her daughters, probably Margaret. Sarah was married in 1790. It also included eight slaves.
In 1800, the household included only two free females, probably Rebecca and Margaret, and six slaves. Margaret didn't marry until 1816.
