Biography

Life (Notes)

Most of what we "know" about our direct ancestor Naomi (Kelsey or Kelso) Stroud is based on oral family history and secondary sources. Simmons-11603 05:36, 24 September 2021 (UTC) Becky Elizabeth

Naomi was named as the first wife of Jesse Stroud along with their eleven children in his 1834 will, Weakley, Tennessee. Jesse R. Stroud born in Orange, NC circa 1759, and died 1834, Weakley, Tennessee. "Jesse and Naomi were parent of Echols, Isaac, Jesse (Jr.), John, Thomas, Nancy Jane, Rebecca, Polly, Sarah "Sally", William, and Peter Stroud, (III).[1] Jesse Stroud's will written in January 1834 and proven July 17 of the same year in Weakley County, TN. In the document he mostly focuses on his "...wife Tabitha" and "their six children" but in the fourth inheritance stipulation he references another wife and family: "...FOURTHLY, having had eleven children by my first wife, NAOMA and having heretofore contributed each liberally, I do therefore give to each, one dollar, viz, Echolds, Isaac, Jeese, John, Thomas, Nancy, Rebecca, Polly, Sally, William and Peter...' [2]

Naomi was born sometime between 1756 and 1764 (if age 20 when first child was born) in North Carolina. She has been linked to parents Samuel Kelso and Susannah Mills Per source there was no documented proof she was from this Kelso/Kelsey family. Samuel Kelso/Kelsey, wife Susanna "Susan", and their seven children and descendants are well documented in "Samuel Kelso/Kelsey,1720-1796... " research by author Mavis Parrott Kelsey. Naomi was not listed as a daughter.[3]

When searching online nearly all of the family tree sites say she died in NC at about 50 years old. No record has been located confirming her death in North Carolina. The only possible discrepancy I have found so far is a genealogy message dated 2000 citing a grave marker/burial site for a "Naomi Kelsey Stroud" buried at Friendship Cemetery in Wayne County, Tennessee.[4] She was not listed in this cemetery on Find A Grave website.

I have been working on these direct ancestors and noticed this second profile for "Naomi" (Kelsey-2598) just popped up without sourcing to help understand the already tangled branches in our tree. The only work done was connecting our great grandfather Jesse Stroud to her profile despite seeing he is already connected to a wife by the same name (Kelsey-75). I realize there are discrepancies in the dates but am hoping we can see through this and work together with logic and notes to have one woman here. If you see profile for Peter Stroud,Jesse's father, there are extensive notes about the "Naomi" conundrum.

I know you were working this....I just do not believe we have the correct parents as she is not listed on the ship manifest when her family came to the colonies....see her father's profile. As no source exists for these parents, I would like to remove her from the parents shown as I am trying to validate this lineage. And having looked through DAR and SAR records, I am no even confident that we have the correct LNAB. All documentation refers to her as Naomi/Naoma Stroud, maiden name unknown.

Thank you, LaMyra, for noting this error. Peter Stroud was added in 2017, but not correct...have removed him.

Isn't Naomi only suppose to have the one husband, Jesse?
