Biography

Thomas Goodrich, son of Ephraim and Sarah (Treat) Goodrich, was born on 3 Aug. 1689 at Glastonbury, Hartford County, Connecticut and not 27 Sep 1701.[1][2]

On further investigation, the published dates of birth of children of Ephraim and Sarah (Treat) Goodrich [3] are scrambled, yet can be reconciled with dates of death and ages at death and other genealogical factors:

1) The date of birth 27 Feb 1685/6 for Richard Goodrich is recorded at Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut.

2) The date of birth 03 Aug 1689 must be for son Thomas Goodrich, since Thomas and older brother Richard witnessed-signed the will of their uncle, Thomas Treat (1668-1713); son of maternal grandfather Richard Treat (1623-1693), on 13 Jun 1709, [4] when Richard was age 23 and Thomas would have been near age 20.

3) The date of birth 21 Dec 1693 was attributed to son Ephraim Goodrich, who died 12 Aug 1771 in Amenia, Dutchess, New York at age 77, so in this case the published date of birth appears to be correct.

4) The date of birth 21 Feb 1697/8 fits daughter Sarah (Goodrich) Butler, who died 06 May 1795 in the 98th year of her age. [5] She is the only known daughter named Sarah.

5) The date of birth 27 Sep 1701 fits son William Goodrich, who died 16 Dec 1787 at age 86. [6]

6) The date of birth 07 Feb 1705/6 fits son David Goodrich, who died 07 Jun 1779 in the 74th year of his age. [7]

7) The only remaining published date of birth, 03 Oct 1699, can be reconciled with son Gideon Goodrich, who died 09 Aug 1769 in the 74th year of his age, [8] if it is modified to 03 Oct 1695. In fact, a cursive number 5 can be mistaken for a cursive number 9 if the top of the cursive 5 appears to merge into the lower portion of the number, possibly due to ink smearing or poor penmanship with the less refined 17th century writing tools.

Unscrambling Dates of Birth of the Children of Ephraim-2 Goodrich and Sarah-3 Treat

Thomas married Hannah Reynolds, daughter of John and Hannah (Dix) Reynolds, on 26 Nov. 1719, at age 30. [2][1]

Thomas died on 10 March 1761 in South Glastonbury, Hartford County, Connecticut and was buried at Green Cemetery, Glastonbury, Hartford County, Connecticut. His memorial has detailed biographical material and links to those of family members.[1]
