Biography

The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.

Henry Done was born in 1282. His family came from Utkinton, Cheshire, England, so he may have been born there.[1]

Henry was the son of Richard Done of Utkinton and his wife, Ellin, the daughter of Sir Thomas Swinnerton,[1] co Stafford.[2] In 31 Edward I (20 November 1302-19 November 1303) Henry's grandfather, Richard Done of Utkinton stated his pedigree in a plea to a quo warranto.[1] [2]

After his mother's death, Henry's father married as his second wife, Isabella, who when widowed married Robert de Huxley.[2] An Inquisition post mortem for Richard Done, Henry's father, was held in 6 Edward II,[2] which was 8 July 1312-7 July 1313.[2]

Henry was the younger brother of Richard Done, who married Joanna — and was living in 3 Edward III (25 January 1329-24 January 1330), because in that year his step-mother and her second husband, Robert de Huxley, obtained the manor of Utkinton for their lives, remainder to Richard son of Richard Done, and his wife, Joanna.[2]

Henry married Mary, the daughter and coheir of Sir Piers Thornton,[1] aka le Roter, and the widow of William de Golburne.[2]

Henry and Mary had children:

  1. John Done who married Anne, the daughter of Richard Eaton of Eaton,[1] aka Heiton of Heiton, co Lanc;[2]
  2. Margaret Done, who married 1) John Davenport of Davenport, esq, second brother and heir of sir Thomas Davenport, kt, and 2) Sir William Brereton of Brereton, kt;[2]

Research Notes

The Done Pedigree in "The Visitation of Cheshire 1580" says this Henry was the son of the fourth Richard Done descended from Jane Kingesley.[1]

In 31 Edward I (1302-3), a Pedigree was recorded in a plea of the Circuit of the Forest of Mara and Mondrem at Chester which said Richard de Kingesley had daughters:[3]

  1. Emm, who married William Gerrard;
  2. Agnes who married William Launceline;
  3. Avice Kingesley, who married Randolph Thornton, and they had:
    1. Piers Thornton, who had:
      1. Ranulph Thornton, who had:
        1. Piers Thornton, who was living in 31 Edward I and had six daughters and coheirs, including:
          1. Mary who married William Goulborne and was living in 31 Edward I;
  4. Jane Kingesley, who married Henry Done, and they had:
    1. Richard Done, who had:
      1. Richard Done, who had:
        1. Richard Done, who was living in 31 Edward I, who had:
          1. Richard Done who had:[1]
            1. Henry Done;[1]
      2. Henry Done of Croton;[1]
    2. Henry Done of Crouton:[4]

In 44 Henry III (28 October 1259-27 October 1260), Mabel who was the wife of Richard de Donn sued Roger de Venables, Lord Thomas de Orreby, Richard son of Richard de Donn, Emma who was the wife of William Gerard, Avice de Thornton and William Launcelin and Joan his wife, for Dower of lands in Crowton and Kingsley. At that time Lord Edward (Prince of Wales) was the guardian of Richard son and heir of Richard de Donn.[5]

Helsby's in his edition of The History of the County Palatine and City of Chester:[6]

  • speculates Henry Donne was the son of Richard Donne lord of Utkynton and his wife, Elizabeth, the daughter of Hugh Venables, knt, baron of Kynderton, this Richard was the second Richard descended from Jane Kingsley;
  • speculates that Henry was the brother of Richard Donne, lord of Utkynton, son and heir, in a plea to a writ of Quo Warranto 31 Edward I, Inq pm 6 Edward II, married 1) Elen, the daughter of sir Thomas de Swynnerton co Staff, and 2) Isabel, a widow in 9-10 Edward II, remarried to Robert de Huxley, living 3 Edward III and perhaps in the time of Richard II;
  • speculates Henry was the brother of Beatrice, wife of Robert Sprot, who were living in 24 Edward I;
  • speculates that Henry married Margaret the daughter and coheir of sir Peter le Roter, knt, lord of Thornton, and widow of William de Golburne, knt, 36 Edward III, and Elizabeth is given as her daughter and heir;
  • speculates that Henry and Margaret had a son John Done who was heir to the estates of Utkynton before 13 Richard II and if Elizabeth de Goldburne was his sister, he must have died without surviving children;
