Biography

Stackpole # 4. Stephen Swett (John), born in England about 1620, married (1) 24 May 1647, Hannah Merrill, dau. of John and Elizabeth, of Newbury, who died 4 April 1662, (2) 4 Aug. 1663, Rebecca, dau. of Thomas Smith. He kept an "ordinary" in 1670, afterwards known as the "Blue Anchor Tavern."

This house, built by him, is still standing and occupied, on the west side of High Street, Newburyport, near the head of Marlborough Street. It has recently been purchased by the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities [in 1911]. (https://www.historicnewengland.org/property/swett-ilsley-house/ ). He sold this place 16 Nov. 1691.^[1]

6 May 1693, Stephen Swett, Sr. of Newbury, in consideration of a valuable sum which was towards his maintenance past and and for security towards his future maintenance, gives, grants, etc., to his son-in-law Edward Poor of Newbury all that his freehold and privileges 'In a Com̄on Lands in Newbury' as also his freehold lot as it was laid out to him in the upper woods in Newbury. Ack. 30 May 1693.^[2]
