Joseph Stebbins was born at Deerfield, Massachusetts on April 12, 1699.
At age 4, he was taken captive in the 1704 raid on Deerfield (AKA "The Deerfield Massacre"), and was one of the youngest members of the forced march to Quebec. Once in New France, he assimilated into local culture and chose to remain there rather than returning to Massachusetts.[1] This was fairly common among the younger captives. In fact, thirty-six of the captives chose to remain in Quebec or the Indian villages where they had been adopted.[2] In Quebec, he went by the name of Joseph Stebenne[1]
