Marriage

Alexander married Jennett (Janet who's maiden name is unknown) in 1761. They were parents of eight children while in Scotland. They decided to move to America and were living in the Mohawk Valley of New York when their son John was born in 1777. Jennett brought a small rocking chair to comfort her youngest child Marjorie on the voyage. This rocking chair is still in the possession of the family.

Life Events

Alexander McIntosh was a young boy when over 300 of his kinsmen were mown down at the battle of Culloden in April 1746.

When Alexander became of age he entered the service of the Crown and was sent to America to fight in the 42nd Regiment under Lord Murray. The British were engaged in the Seven Years War fighting the French and Indians. On 8 July 1758 Alexander was severely wounded during the Battle of Ticonderoga. He was sent back to Scotland to recover.

He would remain a Loyalist and refused to sign the Articles of Association in the Northeast Precinct - along with Lachlan and William McIntosh. Most of his children, and families, were supporters of American Independence.

Alexander was a staunch supporter of the Methodist Church and was active in the affairs of the Grooms Methodist church during his life. He rests in the church yard cemetery. The Grooms Methodist Church was the 'Mother Church' for Methodist congregations in the area. The congregation dwindled and eventually the church was closed in 1960. The building was sold and used for other purposes. It was being used as a furniture warehouse when it burned down in 1975.

Death

Alexander died in 1802 and is interred in Grooms Methodist Church Cemetery in Clifton Park. The back of his tombstone is inscribed with, “My native land is far away My body in America My flesh decayed My spirit fled My body resting with the dead. To God my soul it doth ascend My savior and my constant friend”[1]
