Leonard Shoun was born on 10 November 1773, ' ' (The memorial states birth is Oct. 20, 1771. Goss-873 13:30, 27 January 2016 (EST)) ' ' in Loudoun County, Virginia. Barbara Virginia Slemp was born on 3 May 1775, on the South Fork of the Holston River, in Montgomery County, Virginia, and they were married on 14 August 1792, in Wythe County (now Washington County), Virginia. After their marriage, they immediately came over the mountains to the area at the northern and easternmost part of Tennessee. The area at that time was Carter County, but became Johnson County in the 1830s. They settled in a valley that is now known as Shouns Cross Roads, about two miles from downtown Mountain City, Tennessee.
At that time there were no more than 150 families living in the area now comprising Johnson County. Most of these families had migrated west from North Carolina and Virginia. There, Leonard and Barbara found fertile valleys, plenty of water, lots of timber, and iron ore. Leonard built a forge and produced iron for farm equipment and tools.
Leonard passed away on 9 June 1845 at Shouns, Tennessee. Barbara passed away on 20 April 1851, at Shouns, Tennessee. Both of them, along with some of their descendants, are buried on a knoll in the area known as Shouns Cross Roads, Tennessee.
