Biography

Jeriel was born on 31 December 1780 in Coventry, Tolland, Connecticut, United States.[1] He was the son of Jeriel Root and Rachel (UNKNOWN) Root.

Jeriel Root and Sarah Coleman were married on 16 September 1801 in Coventry, Tolland, Connecticut, United States.[2][3]

Jeriel and Sarah later moved to Dutchess County, New York where he taught school and then to Delaware County, New York where he had a farm.[1]

In 1810 he was living in Roxbury, Delaware County New York, United States.[4] The household included 2 males under 10, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 male over 45, 3 females under 10, 1 female 16-25, and 1 female 26-44.

In 1817 he moved his family to Ross County, Ohio.[1]

In 1820 he was living in Richmond, Ross County, Ohio.[5] The household included 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 26- 44, 1 male over 45, 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-15, 1 females 16-25, 1 female 26-44. One person was engaged in agriculture.

In the fall of 1830 he moved to Hallock Township, Peoria County, Illinois[1] settling in the NE quarter of Section 24, Township 11N, Range 8E.

In 1830 he was living in Jefferson, Ross, Ohio, United States.[6] The household included 2 males 10-14, 1 male 15-19, 1 male 20-29, 1 male 40-49, 1 female 10-14, 2 females 15-19, 2 females 20-29 and 1 female 40-49.

On 2 October 1835 he purchased 40 acres in Section 13, Township 11N, Range 8E.[7] He completed payment for this land on 10 October 1840 in Peoria, Illinois, United States.[8]

On 6 Aug 1838 in Peoria, Illinois he completed payment for 80 acres in the NE quarter of Section 34, Township 11N, Range 8E.[9]

In 1840 he was living in La Salle Precinct, Peoria, Illinois.[10][11] The household included 1 male 15-19, 1 male 50-59, 1 female 5-9, 1 female 10-14, and 1 female 40-40. One person was employed in commerce.

He had a family of ten children.[1]

In 1850 he was living in Peoria, Peoria, Illinois, United States.[12] The household included Jerial Root 69 years, Sarah Root 50 years, Saml Merrill 27 years, and Nancy Nevill 65 years. Jerial was born in Connecticut and was a farmer. Sarah was born in New York. Samuel was born in Ohio and was a cooker. Nancy was born in Virginia.

He married second Sarah Merrill on 3 May 1840.[3]

Jeriel died 18 Jun 1857 and was buried in Root Cemetery, Chillicothe, Peoria County, Illinois, United States.[3]

Based on the county history, he had 10 children. There are 13 children attached to his WikiTree profile. There are 12 children attached to his FamilySearch Person: MPPT-QYX.

Some online trees may have him as the son of Nathaniel or Nathan Root. There is obviously some problem as the child of Jeriel born in 1769. Other trees have him as the son of Elisha Root b. 1744 or William Root Jr b. 1731 but these trees want to make Jeriel b. 1780 the son of Rachel Edgerton b. 1770
