Biography

Mary Ludden was born at Weymouth, December 17, 1636, daughter of James Ludden, a pioneer of the town of Weymouth, corporal of the military company and town officer.^[1]

She has been identified as the woman who married James Puffer at Braintree, Massachusetts, on February 1656, ^[2] but this identification is uncertain. Published transcriptions of the Braintree records call that woman "Mary Swalden,"^[3][4] but no other record for this name has been found, and is suggested that she may have been Mary Ludden daughter of James Ludden. ^[5] Sprague observed that "This name would seem to be a misreading of some other," but he questioned her identification as the daughter of James Ludden, saying that James Ludden "had a daughter Mary born 1636 but his will and the settlement of his estate do not mention her or any Puffer descendants."^[4]

Mary Puffer, the wife of James Puffer, died at Braintree on 22 July 1700.^[6]

5. ↑ Appleton's 1868 account of "The Puffer Family" gives the name of James Puffer's bride as Mary Swalden, following the published record transcriptions, but Nutt's 1915 Descendants of George Puffer called her Mary Ludden and identified her family. West reviewed the different identifications and the marriage record they were based on, concluding that "Mary 'Swalden' [was] probably identical with Mary Ludden." It is not difficult to imagine the handwritten name "Ludden" being mistakenly transcribed as "Swalden."
