Biography

Seba Beebe, son of Lt. Jonathan Beebe, [1] was born [1][2] 6 Apr 1749[2] in Waterbury, New Haven, CT. Seba Beebe served in the Vermont militia and received a pension for his service from the government of Canada. [3] Seba Beebe married Sarah Davis,[3] daughter of Thomas Davis, Feb 21, 1773[4]. From this union nine children were born:

  1. ) David Beebe, b.c. 1773. m. Clarissa Cross, d. 4 March 1853 (or 1855) [4].

    1. ) Marriage. Seba Beebe married Sarah Davis, on 24 Feb 1773 at Westminster, Vt. She was born in 1751 at Lyme, Connecticut and she died in 1826.
    2. ) Biography. Seba lived in Lyme, Ct,; Windsor, Vt. (Circa 1773); Piermont, NH (circa 1778); and Randolph, Vt (prior to 1797). In 1797 he moved to Beebe Plain on the Vermont/Quebec border, making the move via an Ox team.
      1. ) Seba was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. His first enlistment was on 15 Nov 1776 at Bradford, Vt., where he was an Orderly Sargeant under Capt. Strong and Lt John Bahnes. Next he was stationed at Newbury, Vt. and served there until July or August 1777. In 1778 he made Corporal in Col. John Bedeles's Regiment.
      2. ) In 1776 he was a Ranger for the defense of the frontier. His name appears on the pension rolls in Canada in 1831, for service rendered as a Corporal an Sergeant in the Vermont Militia.
      3. ) It is said he was a counterfeiter and thief; he was tried and convicted for the crime, and his punishment was to be branded on the forehead. He fled from Vermont to Canada, but later returned.
      4. ) This family was the founding family of the namesake town, Beebe, Stanstead, Quebec, Canada.
    3. ) Children. Seba and Sarah (Davis) Beebe were the parents of David (441), Hannah (442), Thomas (443), Calvin (444), Luther (445), Rhoda (446), Zera (447), Anson (448), Daniel (449), and Hulda (450) {Editorial; The Hunt Genealogy notes that the Clifford Genealogy is an excellent source, but in this case Hunt is certain that Daniel and Hulda were not children of Seba, as David, Seba's eldest son testified on his mother's pension application that his father (Seba) had nine children, seven sons and two daughter; and all these 9 children (less Daniel and Hulda) are listed on a 5 Dec 1921 DAR application by Elizabeth (Beebe) Mabb }
  • Secondary Source, Perkins, The Vermont Spirit, [10] Data extraction: Quote, "In the settlement of Pomfret, there came from Lower Canada a family of Beebes. {Editorial, actually this family came from Connecticut, migrated to Vermont and then left Vermont and went to lower Canada after the following reported incident} There were Seba, Reuben, Jonathan, and Eli. Seba was a bit weaker than the others. In 1785 he was fined by squire Dana for "striking Andrew Culver with a rake stale." In 1789 Seba was before Squire Throop in a civil action. In 1794 Seba was arrested in Stafford " for falsely forging base metal in the likeness of on hundred Spanish milled dollars, and passing the same knowing them to be counterfeit." He was convicted at a session of the Supreme Court sitting at Windsor in Feb, 1795. The return of William Switzer reads: " In obedience to the within command, I on the twenty-eighth day of February betwixt the hour of one and three P.M took the within named Seba Bebe to a suitable place in the town of Windsor, and there caused his right ear cut off, and branded him with a hot iron letter C on his forehead." In addition to the above sentence, Beebe was fined five pounds, and on March first committed to the Newbury jail in default of payment of the fine.
