Biography

Records of Watertown, Massachusetts, show the birth of Nathanell, son of Nathanell Holland and Sary Holland, in Watertown on the 15th of the second month of 1668 (i.e., 15 April 1668). [1]

Nathaniel Holland was a weaver.[2]

He married Mary by 1692. In "John White of Watertown and Brookline, and Some of His Descendants," Lothrop identified Mary, the wife of Nathaniel Holland, as Mary White, daughter of Joseph and Hannah White, born in Brookline, Massachusetts on 17 July 1670.[3] Torrey's New England Marriages repeated this information, citing Lothrop's work.[4]

The children of Nathaniel Holland and wife Mary were recorded at Brookline, Massachusetts. Most of their given names are not visible in the record, which follows:[5]

  1. ____, daughter, born 27 November 1692.
  2. ____, son, born 19 February 1694/5.
  3. ____, daughter, born 16 February 1696/7.
  4. ____, daughter, born 28 November 1698.
  5. ____, daughter, born 4 October 1700.
  6. ____, son, born 10 August 1703.
  7. Stephen, son, born 17 November 1705.
  8. Huldah, daughter, born 15 February 1707/8.

Comparison with the list of children in his probate file suggests the following association between children's names and dates:

  1. Mary, 27 November 1692.
  2. Joseph, 19 February 1694/5.
  3. Ruth, 16 February 1696/7.
  4. Hannah, 28 November 1698.
  5. Sarah, 4 October 1700.
  6. Nathaniel, 10 August 1703.
  7. Stephen, 17 November 1705.
  8. Huldah, 15 February 1707/8.
  9. Samuel, birth record not found.

Some time after February 1708 (the birth of daughter Huldah in Brookline) and before December 1716 (Nathaniel's death in Dorchester), the family removed to Dorchester, Massachusetts.

Nathaniel Holland died intestate in Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1716, survived by his wife Mary Holland and several children. On 3 December 1716 Mary Holland requested that her son Joseph Holland take administration of her husband's estate.[2]

Joseph Holland, the eldest son, was granted administration of the estate. On 21 March 1719, in a document related to the proposed distribution of the estate), he listed his brothers and sisters as Mary Holland, Ruth Coollidge, Hannah Holland, Sarah, Nathaniel, Stephen, Hulda, and Samuel Holland. The real estate that constituted the majority of the estate was determined to be incapable of division amongst the widow and children without great prejudice to or spoiling of the whole.[2]
