Biography

Gladys was the third daughter of Clara and Reuben Broadbent, and was the first of the girls to marry. She married Charles Albert Hodge in Broken Hill in 1915. For their honeymoon, they travelled to Tasmania, and while in Hobart, they were met by Gladys’s uncle, Walter Weidenhofer who escorted the young couple around the many attractive areas of the city and also took them to the top of Mount Wellington to observe the magnificent view of Hobart.
Gladys and her husband, known as Albert, lived most of their married lives at Seaton, a suburb of Adelaide, where their four children were born – Charles, George, Beth, and Lucie.
Albert was a representative for the Commonwealth Oil Refinery (C.O.R.) which later became known as British Petroleum (B.P.) During the Second World War, Albert was in charge of the supply of liquid fuel at the Penfield Munitions Factory, north of Adelaide.
This factory covered an area of six square miles and employed as many as six thousand workers. (The premises now belong to the Defence Services Technology Organization.)
Lucie, the youngest of Gladys and Albert’s four children, remembers as a small child, her mother’s cousin, Ron Weidenhofer, came to live with the Hodge family. Ron was employed at the P.& B. Battery factory, not far from Seaton. Lucie also remembers the happy days at Pt. Hughes in the summer time.
Her father bought a caravan from the South Australian Railways, and a tent. The two girls slept in the caravan and the two boys in the tent, whilst Gladys and Albert slept in their car. Running up and down the sandhills and swimming in the sea were the children’s favourite activities.
Gladys was a very good tennis player, and although in later life her sight began to fail, she was still able to enjoy a game of tennis.
Albert died in 1961, and Gladys continued to live in their home at Seaton until 1978 when she died at the age of 85.
