Biography

Letitia Venables was the eldest daughter of William de Venables, lord of Warmincham and Radnor, Cheshire.[1]

Letitia was married to Richard de Wilburham,[2] or Wilbram, who she survived.[3] Richard was sheriff of Cheshire in 53 Henry III [1269], and died about 2 Edward I [1274]. Letitia was his second wife, as he had previously been married to Margery, eldest daughter and coheir of Warin Vernon, Baron of Shipbroke, and his wife, Ada, daughter of William third baron of Wich Malbank.[1] Her husband, Richard, was succeeded by William Wilbraham, who was living in 1312.[1]

In a deed which has no date, Nicholas de Vernon granted to Richard de Wilburham and Leticia, his wife, one bovate of land in Whatcroft, with appurtenances, for which they paid 3 marks, witnessed by: Sir Thomas de Manwaring, Sir William de Venablis (Venables), Sir Richard del Holt, Richard Starky, William de Bostock, Robert de Wyninton, Ralph de Horton and others.[2]

Leticia was also married to Philip de Bamvile, who she survived.[4]

In a deed which has no date, Leticia, widow of Philip de Bamvile, granted to Nicholas de Vernon, four butts of land with messuages in Whatcroft (Quatecroft), [Cheshire], in exchange for lands he granted to her in a previous deed, witnessed by: William de Venables, Ralph de Vernon, Robert Grosvenour, then sheriff of Cheshire, Alexander de Bamvile, Richard de Croxton, John del Holt, Thomas de Wevere [Weaver], William de Bostoc, and others. It can be dated to 1284-1287.[4]

Lettice's third husband was Sir Richard Croft.[3]

The family of Wilbraham is descended from Sir Richard de Wilburghan, who was sheriff of county Chester 43 Henry III (1259), and was lord of the manors of Wymincham and Radnor, in that county, in right of his 2nd wife, Letitia, daughter and co-heir of William Venables, of Radnor, youngest son of William Venables, baron of Kinderton.[5]
