The origin of Thomas Joyner of Isle of Wight, though in doubt, seems to lie in the "West Country" of England in the County of Dorset. In the central section of County Dorset lies a small market town called "Bere Regis," identified in Hutchins History of Dorset, as a bustling crossroads of trade as early as the reign of King John. There is to be found in the records of the Perrogative Court of Canterbury, Somerset House, London, the will of one "Thomas Joyner, Tailor of Bere Regis, County Dorset." This will was dated August 18, 1657, and probated in 1658. (See Appendix.) The will of Thomas Joyner mentions a wife Maud and a son William. The will is witnessed by "Thomas Joyner" although he is not mentioned in the will.[12]
