Biography

Jesse Hurlbut (Gideon, David, John, Thomas), was born in Chatham, Ct., 09 September 1771, baptized in Portland Society, 15 September 1771. His trade was that of a wheelwright, and worked in that business until he was 50 years old. He married (1) 04 March 1793, Lucy Bailey Daughter of Abraham Bailey of Chatham; she died 07 May 1843, aged 68 years. He married (2) 01 January 1844, Elizabeth Welch widow of Bliss Welch of East Hampton Society. In 1862, in his 91st year he was "able to walk two and three miles a day without much trouble; does some light work, and is the oldest man in Town." Residence in 1862 was with his son Chester S., at the old homestead in Portland. Observe a copy of his signature in his 91st year. He died in January 1870.^[1][2]
