Joice (Utley) Griffin was a North Carolina colonist.

Joice Utley was born around 1774 in the part of Johnston County, North Carolina, that would later become Wake County. She was a daughter of William Utley and Dorcas Allen. [1]

She married Coleman Griffin around 1795. [citation needed] [1]

In 1810, they were living in Cumberland County, North Carolina. [2]

By 1820, they had moved to Todd County, Kentucky. The 1820 U.S. Federal Census enumerates possibly six children. [3] They continued to live in Todd County through 1830 [4] and 1840. [5]

By 1850, Joice was a widow. The census shows that two of her daughters (?), both born in North Carolina, still lived with her: [6]

  • Dyey (1808-)
  • Phoeba (1810-)

She passed away sometime before 1860 since no census records have been found. This was probably in Todd, Kentucky.

Research Notes

There are no more records for Joice, so she must have died after 1850. We will record her death date after 1850, in Todd County, Kentucky.
