Michael Sloot was a United Empire Loyalist. UEL Status:Proven Date: Undated
Michael SLOOT was one of the founding fathers of Adolphustown and Loughborough. His daughter was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1776. He joined the Royal Army in 1776.
In 1779, he married Rachel Hunt. In October 1779 he received a warrant to levy his proporton of men as Lieutenant in Captain James Smith’s Company of Refugee Volunteers destined for service of the North River. In Lamont's book, we are told that the Michael Sloot and Joseph Allison homes were lost to fire in the war
Although Michael Sloot was among the group with Major Van Alstine, he is what is referred to as a "late Loyalist", in that he did not sign the registar as an Associated Loyalist until after 1783.
Michael Sloot was appointed as one of the Justice of the Peace, Adolphustown, Lennox & Addington Co., 1785.
"It must be borne in mind...that Adolphustown was recognized as the most important center of civilization in Upper Canada at the time. Major Van Alstine was the first justice of the peace in the county to receive his commission; and in due course a similar honor was conferred upon Thomas Doland, Nicholas Hagerman, PeterRuttan, Michael Sloat, and Alexander Fisher." (Trails of the Black Walnut p. )
"The original census is available from three sources:
Library and Archives Canada: (Original document) It was found as an attachment to a land petition of Michael Sloote, Petition S13/42 and signed by Thos. Raile, Town Clerk for the year 1819. [17]
The Ontario Register, Volume III, 1819 Census of Loughborough, Frontenac County, (available at the Public Archives of Canada and major libraries in Canada)
Family Tree Maker's Family Archives Genealogical Records: The Ontario Register, 1780s-1870s, CD # 204
While most of settlers listed were from Loughborough Township, some were also from Portland Township which is to the west. The Spike family for example are listed and they lived in Portland Township at the site of the village of Harrowsmith, (known as Spike's Corners before being named Harrowsmith).
The document is titled "A return of the inhabitants of the Township of Loughborough and Portland". Most of the names in the document are still common in the area. The document listed inhabitants in three categories, Males 16 to 60, Males under 16, and Females. Relative family groups can be determined by the position in each group. This method works up to a point but on the attempt, it seems a logging camp or barn raising was listed throwing the family grouping out about 2/3 of the way through. Please find below a transcription of the original list. Spelling of the names have changed over the years and in the case of many, they could not read nor write so often left it up to the clerk/minister of the time to phonetically spell their own name. For this reason the last name Keller is spelled "Celler", Lyons is spelled "Loyns", etc."
