James Lane was born about 1682 (date uncertain) at Cape Elizabeth, Massachussets Bay Colony (now Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Maine). He was the son of John Lane and Dorcas Wallis.
[1][2][3]
Troubles with the native Indians led the Lane family to move south down the coast about 65 miles to Gloucester, Massachusetts, at Cape Ann, probably about 1700. They resided near Plum Cove in Lanesville, north of Annisquam (both parts of Gloucester). James Lane was Deacon of the third church of Gloucester (at Annisquam}, and was a Selectman of Gloucester. [2]
James Lane married first Ruth (Riggs) Lane (1690-1711) on October 25, 1710 in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts. Ruth died the next year, before her 21st birthday, about the same time her only child was born. [1][2] James and Ruth Lane had one son, James, born August 1711 in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts. He died young on May 14, 1729. [4] James Lane Jr. was buried in Cove Hill Cemetery, Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts,[5] where his parents are also buried.
James Lane married second Judith (Woodbury) Lane (1686-1770) April 16, 1715 in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts. [6] Judith was the widow of William Woodbury.
James and Judith had possibly 7 children in Lanesville / Gloucester (including a second son James, born after the first son James died). [2]
Deacon James Lane died at age 69 on April 20, 1751, in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was buried in Cove Hill Cemetery, Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts. [2][6] His widow Judith asked that her two sons, William and Josiah, be appointed administrators for her husband's estate, as he died intestate.[7] The heirs mentioned in the paperwork:
Judith, widow
William, eldest son
James Lane
Mary Lane
Josiah Lane
Paul Morgan, as marrying eldest daughter (Ruth) of deceased
