Biography

Mary Riggs, the daughter of John and Ruth (Wheeler) Riggs, was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts on June 30, 1696.^[1]

About her parents & birth family Babson tells us^[2]:

"John (Riggs), son of the first Thomas (Riggs), married Ruth Wheeler, January 1, 1690. He died January 12th or 18th, 1748. The date of her death is not known, nor is his second marriage recorded, but the settlement of his estate shows he left a widow, Dorthy. She made her will, February 10, 1758, then living in Topsfield; but it makes no mention of the children of John Riggs.
His children were -

Ruth, born Nov. 4, 1690, married James Lane and died Aug 18, 1711:

John, Mar. 22, 1692;

Jeremiah, Oct. 5, 1694;

Mary, June 30, 1696, married John Lane;

Comfort, May 3, 1698, married Thomas Cotton of Portsmouth, N.H.;

Jonathan, died Jan. 1900, 1700; Jonathan, born December 20, 1700;

Abigail, Sept. 10, 1702, married Nath'l Low of Ipswich, and died Aug. 6, 1744;

Rachel, Aug. 30, 1704, married Thomas Lufkin of Ipswich;

Elizabeth, June 26, 1707, married Daniel Hill of Newbury;

and Ruth, again, Feb. 16, 1713, married Adam Wellman.

Mary Riggs and John Lane were married Jan. 1, 1713 in Gloucester.^{[3] [4]} Children from this union included:

1. Patiance, the daughter of John and Mary, born in Gloucester, Massachusetts on July 12, 1715.^[5] Patiance died the day she was born: Patiance, d. John and Mary, July 12, 1715. ^[6]
2. Sarah, the daughter of John and Mary, in Gloucester, Massachusetts on June 18, 1716.^[7]
3. Ruth, the daughter of John and Mary, in Gloucester, Massachusetts on Apr. 21, 1718. [bp. Apr. 7. CR1] ^[8] Ruth, d. John and Mary, died May 6, 1718, a. abt. 15 d. ^[9]
4. Dorcas, the daughter of John and Mary, in Gloucester, Massachusetts on June 4, 1719.^[10]

6. David, the son of John and Mary (Riggs) Lane, was baptized in Gloucester First Parish on June 10, 1722.^[13]
7. Comfort, the daughter of John and Mary, in Gloucester, Massachusetts on Aug. 18, 1724.^[14]

John Lane was killed by the Indians near Penobscot (fox harbour) on June 22, 1724, at the age of 36 years. ^[15] John died intestate, and his probate case 16317 was dated 28 September 1724. ^[16] His widow Mary was administrator, and she received her widow's portion, one-third. The couple's son David received two shares of the remaining estate as the only living son, and the four living daughters, Mary, Sarah, Dorcas and Comfort, each received a share.

Mary died 31 January 1742, and is buried in Cove Hill Cemetery in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts. ^[17]
