Barnes Cooley (1748 - 1844)

Barnes [Barns in record] Cooley was born 8 August 1748 in Brimfield, Hampden County, Province of Massachusetts Bay to parents Ebenezer and Mary(Barnes) Cooley.^[1][2]

Barnes married his first wife Hannah Shattuck on 18 July 1771 in Deerfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay.^[3] They had three children.

Barnes married his second wife Eleanor Sloan on 12 August 1777 in Pelham, Hampshire, Massachusetts, United States.^[4] They had seven more children. Barnes and Eleanor and their family may have lived in VT (1800 Federal Census places Barnes Cooley in Windham Co. VT) before moving to Otsego County NY in the early 1800s.

He is listed in the 1810 census as B. Cooley in the town of Hartwick when he was in his 60s. In 1820 he is listed as "Barney" and living next to his son Rufus in Hartwick. Eleanor is believed to have died in the 1830s at age 81. In 1840 he lived with his son Rufus in Hartwick, NY.

Barnes, most researchers agree (including a gravestone transcriber in the 1930s), died at the age of 95 or 96 years; some time around 1845. Though family lore says he died in 1849 at the home of his son Rufus in Hartwick NY.

Note: stone is damaged and exact date of death is unknown - even the original DAR readings from the 1930s give a variety of death dates. Family lore says he died in 1849 at his son Rufus' home in Hartwick NY
