Note N1088OBIT: DIED April 4, 1881 Died: At the residence of Glover Laird, April the 4th, Mrs. Ruth Scofield, aged 91 years and 8 months.
Mrs. Scofield was born near Palmayra, N.Y. August 17th, 1789, where
she resided with her parents until her marriage to Reuben Scofield, March
6th, 1808.
Mr. S. , in 180?, emigrated to the then new county of Orleans, N.Y., where the family resided until about the year 1834, when they moved to this state, then a territory and settled near what is now called the village of Coldwater.
Thus it will be seen that Mrs. Scofield was truly a pioneer: and one whom many of the old settlers of this and Branch county will remember with kind feelings: for the latch string of the Scofield cabin was always out when a tired or hungry pioneer came along.
About 30 years ago the Scofields moved from Branch country and settled on Nottawa prairie, where they continued to reside until the death of Mr. S. some two years ago. Mrs Scofield was the mother of 11 children, only four of whom survive her, two
sons and two daughters. She was much beloved by neighbors and friends, and
although not a member of any church, she had strong religious convictions.
She was buried from the M.E. church Wednesday morning, Rev. Calkins, of
Parkville conducting the service.
